Stay Well: Self-Care Ideas to Avoid Burnout

2020 has been a year of unanticipated turns. With the overwhelming growth of the pandemic, we have all suffered from stress on different levels. Now is the best time to take care of our minds, bodies, and spirits. Self-care does not necessarily mean going to the spa for a massage. You can practice the best self-care routines from the comfort of your own home.  Please sit back, kick your feet up, and let us take you on a journey to relax your mind.

Disconnect from social media

Social media can be fun. You follow your friends, share memes, and can follow your favorite skincare brands (like us😉).  However, sometimes we tend to get lost in our social media world and forget about our real world. Though you may feel connected through followers, we lose connection to the ones around us, who we know. One way you can disconnect yourself is to set yourself on a timer. You’d be surprised at how many hours in a day you spend on social media. Give yourself between 30 mins to an hour a day on social media. Keep your phone in another room while you’re working. Try to avoid picking up your phone or tablet as soon as you wake up, meditate or stretch instead. Set your devices to sleep mode at least an hour before going to bed. Starting with these little steps can make significant changes for your self-care.

Meditation and Affirmations

You may be thinking to yourself, “I do not have time to sit still to meditate”. Earlier, we mentioned not picking up your devices as soon as you wake up in the morning but to meditate instead. That’s one of the best times! Your mind is already free of chatter, and you can be still. The benefits of meditation are amazing! It aids in reducing stress, improving focus, increases creativity, and patience. The purpose of mediation is to help us to be still and connect with our inner selves.

Affirmations are powerful, positive statements you say to yourself. They help to build and create your reality. Saying things like “I am great” or “I can do anything I put my mind to” helps motivate and keep you on track with your goals. You can say affirmations to yourself during mediating. With your eyes closed, you can visualise all the great things you want for yourself.

Exercise

Since some of our favourite gyms are closed, we can still burn the calories and show our bodies love through in-home exercises. Some companies have even been offering discounted rates on virtual exercise and yoga programs. Though we must socially distance, the outdoors is still open. Taking a brisk walk or a light jog can help improve your sleep and reduce stress. Love dancing? Throw on some of your favorite songs and get your body moving! Yes, that is also exercising.

Baths. Yes, please! 🛀🏾

Who doesn’t like to relax in a nice, hot bubble bath? You can jazz it up to make you feel like you have escaped to a spa. Treat yourself! Add a few drops of R&R Shea Oil to your bath, play some music, burn your favourite candle and close your eyes. Throw some flower petals in the mix if you want to be fancy. Baths are one of the best things you can do for your self-care. It aids in elevating your mood, relaxes muscles, and provides a restful sleep. You can even take a bath while reading this article.

Take a cat nap

Raise your hand if you tried to fight taking naps as a child? 🙋🏾‍♀️

It felt like we would miss something amazing if we closed our eyes for just 15 minutes. Little did we know, taking naps are a great way for our bodies to reset and rejuvenate. It improves our moods, increases alertness, and prevents sleep deprivation. Carve out 20-30 mins for a good nap today!

Saying “No”

Telling people “No” can sometimes be one of the hardest things to do. Some of us are naturally people pleasers and believe that saying no will let people down. But what about you? Think about how you feel when you agree to go somewhere or help someone with a task that you were not interested in doing? We end up feeling miserable. Saying “no” does not mean you are rejecting the person; it just simply means that you are honoring yourself and your peace. If you are unable to help with something, politely tell them no and possibly offer an alternative. Remember, self-care also involves setting boundaries.

Show yourself some love today and try one of our suggested methods. Share some of your self-care tips with us too!
